Embedding careers into the curriculum

From September 2025, DfE expects all schools to use the updated Gatsby Benchmarks.

A guide to Gatsby Benchmark 4 | Gatsby Benchmarks

Gatsby benchmark 4: Careers in the Curriculum states:

As part of the school’s programme of careers education, all teachers should link curriculum learning with careers. Subject teachers should highlight the progression routes for their subject and the relevance of the knowledge and skills developed in their subject for a wide range of career pathways.

Every year, in every subject, every pupil should have opportunities to learn how the knowledge and skills developed in that subject helps people to gain entry to, and be more effective workers within, a wide range of careers.

The My Learning My Future resources from the Careers and Enterprise Company are designed to support teachers to connect their subject to careers and the world of work.

A teacher inspiration guide and ready-made student slides are available for each subject.

Within your classroom and lessons, you could:

  • Use a video clip to demonstrate how a topic or unit within your curriculum links to a career or employability skills eg MYPATH - why bother or icould
  • Display career posters highlighting pathways and careers linked to your subject.
  • Discuss your own education and career pathway.
  • Invite a guest speaker from a local college or university to illustrate ambitious progression pathways.
  • Invite a West Hill Alumni to share their experiences beyond school.
  • Invite a local business employer or employee to discuss how your subject links to their business or an employability skill that they seek.

Feedback

We welcome staff feedback on our careers programme. Please contact Mrs Appleby.
