The Duke of Edinburgh’s award is a well-regarded programme that allows young people to participate in a range of activities and events over three different levels, between the ages of 14-24. The course provides opportunities to develop skills, volunteer, and improve physical fitness, as well as plan and undertake an overnight expedition.

It introduces young people to exciting, positive, challenging and enjoyable things to do in their free time. It encourages friendships amongst those taking part and across the generations, with adults who give up time to share skills and help organise the programme.

The scheme works through a four-section programme at three levels. At West Hill we are able to facilitate the Bronze award (6 months commitment for year 9 students) and the Silver (12 months commitment for year 10 students).

As well as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, the Outdoor Education department offers annual adventure activity trips in Europe, where students learn how to windsurf, kayak, body board and sail, along with developing mountain biking skills.

Since 2011, the school has been on several international expeditions, visiting Kenya, Borneo, Uganda and Tanzania, led by staff from Camps International. Life on the expeditions places students in situations that cannot be replicated in the classroom, providing students with opportunities to develop skills that will be valuable to them in many areas of their lives. They are able to contribute to very rewarding and important community and wildlife projects that allow them to take on new challenges and gain a better understanding of what they can achieve individually and in a team.
