Curriculum Aims

We aim for every boy to:

  • develop basic key skills, encouraging creativity and building confidence;
  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences;
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques;
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design;
  • learn about great artists, craft makers and designers, understanding the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Curriculum Information

Students study the AQA Art and Design (Fine Art) GCSE. Specification code 8202.

This is a two-year course with two components.

There are 4 assessment objectives for each component:


AO1: Develop ideas through investigations, demonstrating critical understanding of sources.
AO2: Refine work by exploring ideas, selecting and experimenting with appropriate media, materials, techniques and processes.
AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions as work progresses.
AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and demonstrates understanding of visual language.

Summary of Assessment

Component 1: Portfolio of work (worth 60% of final grade)

Component 2: Externally Set Assignment (worth 40% of final grade)
Each assessment objective is given a score out of 24, giving an overall mark out of 96. This applies to both the portfolio of work, and the final exam.
