SEN
Special Educational Needs are provided for by every member of staff and in every lesson at West Hill School. We have a team of a SENCO, Learning Support Manager, specialist teacher and eight highly skilled Learning Support Assistants who work in two specialist rooms and lessons across the school.
All pupils follow a similar curriculum. Pupils who have SEN will receive personalised support from the SENCO, the LSAs or the Learning Support Unit depending on their area of need. They may also be part of a smaller targeted teaching group in Year 7.
The SENCO and specialist teacher provide individual and small group teaching where appropriate, including multisensory programmes for pupils with dyslexia or other literacy challenges.
In Year 10 we offer a Foundation Learning option as an alternative to a GCSE option and we also offer partnerships with our local colleges for some vocational qualifications.
We have a Learning Support Unit run by Mrs. Sanders which provides pupils with targeted support for any areas of need. The centre also hosts outside agencies who may be working with us such as CAMHs, Speech and Language, BLISS, CLASS and the school nurse.
West Hill School is proud to maintain its inclusive admissions policy and has built up secure relationships with our local primary schools. The SENCO will attend any statement reviews in Years 5 or 6, wherever possible, to ensure that the transition from Primary to Secondary school is an exciting and enjoyable experience for all our pupils.
All pupils are encouraged to be involved in the extensive extra-curricular activities provided by the school and support will be given where needed. We are very proud to watch some of our pupils develop into fine young men who now represent the school as prefects.
