The Modern Foreign Languages department comprises of 2 full time members of staff and one part time member of staff.
Full use is made of the languages websites, to which we subscribe, and we aim to offer foreign trips to all pupils throughout their time at West Hill. Past trips have included trips to Berlin, Paris and Cologne. We also run regular trips to local places of cultural interest, such as the Christmas Markets in Manchester and the Langtech European Curriculum Street in Standish. We have good links with Ashton 6th Form College and our Gifted and Talented pupils have participated in ‘A’ level classes.
Key Stage 3
The majority of pupils in Key Stage 3 have 2 one hour lessons per week. Lessons are lively with the emphasis on practical skills, particularly speaking. The language studied by each year group alternates between French and German. Our new year 7 from September 2013, will, therefore, study French for 3 years.
Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4 pupils may opt to continue with the language they have studied.
GCSE pupils follow the Edexcel course, with examinations in speaking and writing throughout year 10 and the first part of year 11. Listening and Reading examinations are taken at the end of year 11. This course prepares pupils for progression to ‘A’ level and involves pupils being able to talk and write about their lives and current issues such as environmental concerns and job prospects.
